 1) im Jazz eine Variationsform, bei der die Melodie bei jeder Wiederholung verändert, das zugrunde liegende rhythmische Schema jedoch beibehalten wird.
 
 2) Sozial- und Verhaltenswissenschaften: ein bestimmtes (ritualisiertes oder institutionalisiertes) Verhaltensmuster, eine soziale Grundstruktur, ein Denkmodell, eine gegliederte Anordnung oder ein aus bestimmten, immer wiederkehrenden Elementen zusammengefügtes Ablaufschema.
 
 3) Sprachwissenschaft: Strukturmodell, nach dem eine unbegrenzte Anzahl gleich gebauter Sätze mit unterschiedlichen lexikalischen Elementen gebildet werden kann, so Artikel + Substantiv (im Nominativ) + Verb (im Imperfekt) + Artikel + Substantiv (im Akkusativ), z. B. »der Mann (Lehrer, Schüler) nahm das Heft (Lineal, Buch)«.

[englisch, 'pætən], ein- oder zweitaktige rhythmische, aber auch harmonische oder melodische Figuren, die mehrfach wiederholt werden, oft den gesamten Titel beibehalten bleiben, beispielsweise ostinate Rock-Bass-Figuren oder grundlegende lateinamerikanische Rhythmen (Clave-Beat, Bossa-Nova-Beat u. a.). Auch Improvisationsmuster (Standardphrasen) werden als methodische Hilfe in Patternsammlungen gedruckt angeboten.
